The Ultimate Prize

The fall high school sports have begun and athletes, coaches, parents, and fans alike will set their sights on the various prizes that await them at the end of their respective seasons: Girls Golf Championships October 9-10; Girls’ Softball Championships in Hastings, October 11– 13; Boy’s Tennis Championships in Omaha & Lincoln on October 12-13; State Cross Country Championships in Kearney October 20; State Volleyball Tournament in Lincoln November 9-11; and State Football Championships at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, November 20-21. These are the ultimate prizes for every high school athlete and coach participating in sports this fall in Nebraska.

But these aren’t the ultimate prizes St. Paul writes of in 1 Corinthians 9, “24 Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it. 25 Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 26 So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. 27 But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.”

Life is indeed a race, but it doesn’t end when we reach the earthly finish line (death). Eternal life with Jesus begins when we reach the end of our earthly race because Jesus has already finished the race for us. He endured the scorn and shame for us. He endured the cross for us. He rose victorious from the grave and conquered sin, death, and the power of Satan once-and-for-all, for us. Jesus is now seated at the right hand of God waiting to receive us at the finish line in heaven. The ultimate prize is the one we will receive on Judgment Day, and not the prizes we accumulate in life. It’s you He wants! Each and every one of YOU!

September Blessings!
