April 2021 Letter

Pastor of Dr. Martin Luther

On April 20th we commemorate the life and ministry of Pastor Johannes Bugenhagen (1485-1558). Bugenhagen was from Pomerania in northern Germany and was appointed pastor of Wittenberg in 1523 through the efforts of Martin Luther. Thus he served as Luther’s own personal pastor and confessor.

One of the greatest scholars of the Reformation era, Bugenhagen helped translate the New Testament into Low German (the language of the common people) and wrote a commentary on the Book of Psalms. He also worked to organize the Lutheran Church in northern Germany and Denmark. In 1539, Bugenhagen became superintendent of the Church in Saxony. After the death of Luther on February 18, 1546, Bugenhagen took care of Luther’s widow Katharina (Katie) and children. Pastor Bugenhagen died in Wittenberg, Germany in 1558.

Almighty God, You upheld Your servant Johannes Bugenhagen with strength to confess the truth of Your Holy Word in the face of adversity during the Reformation. You called him to minister to Your servant Martin Luther and his family during those turbulent and troubling times in Your Church. By Your mercy, keep us steadfast in the true faith, that we may constantly walk in peace on the way that leads to eternal life through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

April Blessings!
