Ascension
This is the day that Jesus ascends to our Father in heaven. Christ’s resurrection from the dead, his descent into hell and his bodily ascension into heaven are Jesus’ glorious
victory over sin, death and the devil.
The Scriptures teach of the Ascension in Mark 16:19, Luke 24:51, and Acts 1:9. Jesus is taken out of the sight of the disciples on a cloud. The cloud is important because it indicates the presence of God. Throughout the Bible there are numerous references to clouds, all which represent the almighty Lord our God.
Ascension Day is a festival of our church and occurs on the fortieth day after Easter. Ascension is celebrated throughout the world and rightly so because of the significance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taken to the right hand of God the Father to sit on his throne. Martin Luther’s small catechism explains in the second article of The Apostle’s Creed that the Bible teaches that Christ, also according to His human nature, rules and fills all things with divine power and majesty. God set Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come; and hath put all things under His feet and give Him to be the Head over all things to the Church which is His body, the fullness of Him that filleth all in all. Ephesians 1:20-23
